5 myths about indigo children and adults, debunked

In the 1970s there was a big phad about these "new kids" - indigo children - that were coming along to change the world. Apparently they were going to bring about a spiritual revolution which would bring heaven on earth by 2012.

Most of what you find on the internet about indigos is pretty confused. Most of the people who write about indigos are not indigos. Some of them are decent channelers, and they at least can channel some decent information, but they often make a good few mistakes while they're about it. Doreen Virtue - we're looking at you. Other people are neither indigo nor channelers, and their only source is second-hand, third-hand, fourth-hand.... and we have a set of Chinese whispers that cross the world and before you know it, indigos are unspeakably strong or we're magical superbeings that can walk on water or God knows what.

Indigos are pretty special creatures. But we're not Jesus. And we're not every child, either. Let's debunk some myths.

Writing is Andrew Gubb, indigo, for your enlightenment :)

Myth #1: all children of a certain age are indigos.

I've heard this theory that all children born after 1992 are indigo. Actually I've just done a search on google and I hear this same rumour for many different dates ranging between 1984 and 2000. Seemingly the indigo revolution is just on the horizon, and will happen as soon as these children are grown up. Also, they are always children.

Nothing could be further from the truth, people. Indigos have existed for thousands and thousands of years. They are simply a stage of spiritual evolution. This world is still on the green level moving on blue, but every so often a few indigos and crystals come along to accelerate things in strategic points. This world is still at a stage where indigos are made to be leaders and are rare, influential people; they are not about to become the whole population.

And if they were, you'd know it. Indigos don't keep quiet. If every schoolchild was indigo, there wouldn't be any schools any more - they would have been blown up long ago.

Myth #2: indigos are all of a certain age; they didn't exist on this planet before a certain date.

Not my experience at all. I've known or heard of indigos up to 50 years old; even one lady of 40 or so, who was inexplicably wiser than her vibration seemed to reflect, told me about her dead father who seemed to have all the traits.

I myself have expressed the indigo energy for several lifetimes.

I think it could well be that we are getting more indigos now. Makes sense. The world in general is going through a really rapid spiritual evolution. We need leaders at this point. So I won't say no to that.

Myth #3: indigos are all psychic.

I WILL say that indigos are all intuitive to some degree, though not all indigos realise their capacity to talk to spirits, channel angels, see the future and other cool things. I say "realise" this capacity because everyone has it to some degree, it's just a case of whether you cultivate it or not. Think of it like sporting ability or artistic ability or whatever else. There's talent, and then there's training.

So some indigos basically find themselves seeing spirits from day 1, remember their past lives, and all that. Some don't. I haven't grown up talking to spirits personally, though most psychics point out to me that I have a lot of ability.

There are some psychics who are very good at channeling messages and have natural ability but are not indigo. You can tell because they channel wisdom but they don't necessarily live it :)

Indigos have in general what I call "natural intuition". They're generally very sensitive and connected, and when they need to know something, they generally know it, in their gut, in their actions, in the things they are drawn to. Contrast this with certain psychics I've met who channel everything they can except what they need to know to help themselves :)

Myth #4: All indigos are lightworkers

Hmm, I think all indigos have lightworker potential. A lot of them get stuck in resistance and bitterness though. I'm sorry to say it but a lot of the stuff that goes on in this world is damn hard to forgive - and many non-indigos know this, but they often don't know the half of it. Indigos feel injustice very strongly, and it's everywhere. They can get tied up in hate and never get out.

Any indigos reading this, though: work on it, because this life is just a dream and we're meant to be happy, OK? :)

Myth #5: All indigos are spiritual masters

Yes and no. An indigo's soul is a brilliant light, a sight to behold. However, sometimes the soul isn't expressed by the incarnation. On the other hand, some incarnations of less experienced people (I hate to say less evolved, because... I just don't like to think of this as a scale, OK?) are so deeply connected with their spirits, through meditation, introspection and serious dedication to personal growth, that they incarnate greater wisdom than some indigos will. I think Steve Pavlina may be one of these people. Apart from his solitude as a child, he didn't seem to exhibit the characteristics of an indigo at that point. Not to say I wouldn't really enjoy having a conversation with this guy. I think he's wiser than I currently am, or at least he writes better self-help advice.

Steve Pavlina, come to think of it, says that he directly experiences Being (Oneness) 80% of the time (in one old post; I imagine he experiences it more now). I've only had this experience in short glimpses fairly recently. So we're not born enlightened or anything like that. If you work hard you can be more spiritual than an indigo. Some of us get lazy, or addicted to drama. Some of us die bitter. We might be perceptive, but we're not always high-vibrational. Free will or the choice between fear and love exists on all levels. (Or if there is some level in which it does not exist, I haven't been there yet to be able to report back).

Indigos like feedback on their blogs

So let's wrap this up. Indigos aren't supermen, aren't X-men, we don't run about with our pants outside our trousers. We're not going to change the world in one fell swoop though if you listen to us we can be pretty effective in helping out to a certain extent. We're not everywhere and we're not nowhere. We are what we are. Om :)

We often have some pretty cool superpowers, but so do you. I couldn't conclude an article about indigos without reminding you this: whatever we have, YOU have. The principle of Oneness reminds us that all things contain the essence of all other things. A rock has excitement in some microscopic quantity. A bird has intelligence. Pigs have decorum. The Pope has a tiny drop of love in his heart. Jesus had some hatred in him. And whatever the essence of the indigo is - perception, power, energy, genius, whatever it is - you have it too. Not even that far away. Work on your growth, and you can be a master. You're limited by your potential but not how much you choose to live up to it - and most people never come close to their potential.

More writing about indigos is coming up. By the way, if you are wondering about indigos and want to know if you are one, I always direct people to this article by Kristen Finlayson. The rest of her blog is awesome too.

I don't know about you, but I have the potential for some dinner!

Hope you enjoyed the article. Do tell me what you think, okay?

hi...great site. I fit the description of Indigo on all levels, except for that I loved school. I never felt the need to be angry at the principle or teachers, and while I may have questioned some of the social aspects of it - I loved learning - writing and especially reading. I kept on feeling smarter and smarter daily! I think I'm a lightworker and that is why I am much more calmer, empathetic and less likely to act out. I'm highly psychic although haven't fully delved in as deeply as i would like yet. I see and feel the divinity in everyone (even those that we may deem as the worst scum on Earth)). Perhaps that is why its hard for me to feel much hatred toward others. Life and ppl's overall consciousness levels correlate into how they treat others and how they live life. If at my consciousness level let's say is at a "10th grade" educational level, and most of society is still at "grade level 2" I can't be mad at them for not understanding geometry or Honors English, because they still have so many more levels to undergo and evolve through - during their present lifetime and likely through other lifetimes as well (not all necessarily on this Earth plane). Anyway, even as advanced as we may consider ourselves to be, there is still much more to learn (hence one of the reasons we are still here right ;) But, I can tell that at higher consciousness levels we vibrate at a higher, loving, and stronger frequency. To some people- typically those at lower vibrating energies who like to 'control' and operate on a higher fear based level - we come across as threatening - that's why tpyically during wartime, artists, poets and others were persecuted and killed since their ideas inspire so many others, to get out of the cage and into the garden! . I feel that as Indigo and lightworkes, just the fact that we resonate so deeply with universal love, our vibration itself causes a great deal of healing to those around us (it's amazing how we can make people feel calm and relaxed as they hang around us, if they will only allow to receive the energy) Our high frequency vibrations are also helping to ease the shift and consciousness of our planet into 2012. So, let's continue to feed our souls and practice love and forginess. Have an Amazing day!

Thanks for the comment!

I know what you mean about making people calm and relaxed. In general I find I have a lot of power to affect people's moods according to my own... a powerful double-edged sword.

You have a cool philosophy - we don't have to be angry all the time, it's true, and I admit I have work to do there. School was harsh for me but then I may have attracted hard situations or not known how to deal with them, too.

Nice to meet you :D

Spiritual & Aura

Well, I prefer to classify people by their spiritual attitudes. Spiritual attitudes can be shown by the most activated chakra and the way they react towards daily motions in their life : what angle they use to see problems and how they solve it, and understanding and consciousness of being human as God's creature.

And about Aura, some references said there are 7 layers of Aura that cover our body. some change in color and the core showed the true color of the person.

re

Hi Putri,

interesting! So a "red" person, maybe, would be one who dealt with a problem by being physical, and orange who dealt with it by being creative, etc, and an indigo someone who looks to percieve the core truth of an issue to solve it?

Hugs :)

Talk soon OK :)

Well done.

Liked it, and will read again tomarrow, when I'm not so tired. I want to start a new, one world party for peace... Called the: United People of Earth (UPE) I think Indigos are going to help me somehow? Our third party candidate is found in the Internet and beats Obama in 2012 and truly unites the world in peace... or something. G'nite

Hi! Can you sign your name if you reply again? Sorry I like to know who I'm talking to... let's see about changing this blog program so it makes people sign their names... I'm going get that done now, it's been on my to-do list for too long...

Your vision sounds amazing, and if this is what your soul truly has decided to do, and what the Universe is calling for you to do, then you can expect that I'll be interested in helping. I think an important thing to remember is that all external changes need to be stimulated by an internal change. The world is changing now because we have outgrown the old ways - and because we WANT to outgrow the old ways, and in the external change we will be making the internal change at the same time. If you do external without a matching internal, though, you'll end up with something like the Russian revolution where the oppressed became the new oppressors and nothing changed. We don't want that.

I do feel like the world is calling out for some REAL democracy... maybe it is time. Keep in touch.

By the way, I feel that I am a leader - indigos are all leaders in a way, but other indigos can be artists or healers or many things, but specifically I feel like a leader. A psychic told me I'd be in a politcal organisation in about ten or twenty years - I'd be surprised if presidency was in the equation though. I really am not sure if the world, crying out as it is for a change, is ready for a real change. Obama epitomises it for me. Everyone knows something has to change. But they just fall for a new trickster because they're not brave enough to REALLY wake up yet. I sincerely hope it happens in a positive, healthy way, but I feel that maybe things will have to really be shaken up before people are ready to really transform themselves. It's like a drug addict. Many addicts need to nearly die and really get scared before they're ready to make a change.

Hopefully we can shake people up in a loving way though ;) That's what I'm here for.

WAKE THE FUCK UP!!! :)

Andrew out

Jack Christopher - Andrew, thanks for clearing this up.

Andrew, thanks for clearing these issues up. The other stuff on the web never helped me suss what "indigo children" actually meant.

So this is all basically new to me. I'm looking to develop my metaphysical/spiritual and intuitive/psychic sides. What sites should I binge read?

Hi Jack! Do you feel

Hi Jack! Do you feel identified with the indigo? The only other site on the web that really helped me understand indigos was by Kristen, which I linked. It's really good for binge reading. :)

I think Erin Pavlina is indigo too - in any case I feel extremely connected to her. I think I may kiss her when I meet her in real life :) She is at www.erinpavlina.com.

Steve Pavlina, her ex-husband still-soul-mate is at www.stevepavlina.com. His writing about subjective reality and the law of attraction is great.

For intuitive development, healingandinsight.net is great. I don't feel like Anna is indigo (seeing as we're talking about indigos a lot here) but she is really good at what she does. Great psychic, quite wise, great blogger on spirituality and stuff.

www.spirituality-in-you.net is by my good friend Chris Landry. Great psychic. It'll give the best value if you can get talking to the guy.

I'm currently binge reading beyond-within.com. Very interesting, independent take on spirituality and metaphysics and all that. Really learnt/am learing a lot from them.

Akemi at yes-to-me.com is great for spirituality. It's funny, I thought she was indigo for a long while, but it seems like she's one of those very wise non-indigos I was talking about. I saw a comment on her blog, a person telling her story, who had clearly gone through a transition to indigo or maybe crystal. This person said she had undergone the transition against her conscious will and was still angry at God for doing this to her, as she's now too sensitive to really be in the presence of lower vibrational people comfortably for much time. (I have this, which is why I currently work from home, through my blog). Well, Akemi didn't understand that, and I'm sure from her vibe that she was thinking that this person wasn't more spiritual for being more sensitive! I found that funny. On the other hand, she is great at her own sort of spirituality and writes about that sort of thing (meditation and stuff) better than I.

Can't think of anyone else. Maybe I'll get back to you if something comes up. Enjoy! :)

Andrew

Andrew, thanks for the recommends.

Thanks Andrew, you hipped me to good people. :) The only other person to add is Andrea Hess. Wait. I do know to get more intp Abraham Hicks, Byron Katie and Wayne Dyer. But they aren't accessible in that I can just find their stuff easily, like a blog. Or at least I don't know where to find it.

But I'm well-versed in Steve Pavlina. SR is my default view of life but I need LOA help. I do read Erin. I'm realizing she's even more relevant to where I'm going. I read Anna too, but not regularly. And I've read a tiny bit of Chris Landry and Akemi. I'll double up on them all.

Hmm, do I identify with indigo (or crystal)? Judging from Kristen list I definitely identify with many of the things she lists as characteristics. But at the same time I could see many people identifying with the list. Still as far as I'm concerned, whether I *am* indigo or not, I can see how it's a useful view to have of yourself (and others).

One other thing, I know of a recent ancestor that claimed psychic (voodoo) powers. IIRC they drowned her. This was the 1800s. Several of the women in my family (including my grandmother) claim some intuitive ability.

Hi, thanks. I'll sort that out now.

Colors

I found this very interesting, because I sometimes associate color with people and songs. I see the color indigo at times by songs by Alanis Morissette and Robert Smith, I make music by simple piano and guitar chords (ilike.com Pelican Music Stuff) and try to obtain that indigo sound. Cursed be Cannan, I'm not musically inclined but I think the color comes from the attitude or personality of the "song" rather than how it is construted.

You mentioned green/blue/indigo, I see reds and yellows and orange. I without convinction have associated indigo with the planet Pluto in astrology, idk. Is there an association/order with colors?

Like "D" is blue
"E" is green
"G" is orange
ect? Is there a discourse somewhere

Youwantthenewsletter@yahoo.com

Hmm, I don't know. Indigo is

Hmm, I don't know. Indigo is supposed to be our aura colour. I can't say much more than that.

I like some of Alanis Morisette's songs, but I don't think she's indigo, though.

Andrew

And also... (about the aura) :)

Indigo is not the colour of the aura (not exclusively anyway) you can find a little more about how the "indigo" name came about in the books "indigo children" and "an indigo celebration". A further explanation from Doreen Virtue:

"the term indigo children refers to the color "indigo blue" (...) the term is derived from chakra, or energy colors. Each generation seems to have a group consciousness, a group purpose (...) 1990s, there was a resurgence of interest in psychic phenomena (...) This interest in psychic phenomena is regulated by the sixth chakra, known as the "third eye". This chakra spins at three different colors: white, purple and primarily indigo".
Etc etc.

Indigos can have indigo auras if they have come to their full potential, I would think. Young indigos can still have different colours aura, for example when they are teenager and still growing up, going through heaps of changes, their aura might be red even though they are indigo.

weena

Hey Weena :) My aura

Hey Weena :)

My aura photograph a while back showed orange/red and an indigo friend of mine who took a photograph at the same event had a pinkish red. I'm not sure if I resonate with these machines though, I'd like to know what technology they use exactly. Perhaps it managed to pick up on some emotional disturbance at a more superficial level, but if it were looking to understand my spiritual development on a deeper level I think it failed.

One explanation I heard was that we have different auras - in which case this one would be the "life aura", your deepest level identity, which would change little, if at all, in the space of one lifetime.

Seeing as I don't see auras very often and when I do perceive colours around a person it doesn't really make any of this clearer, rather more confused, I prefer to leave the topic of auras to one side a bit...

So Doreen believes that indigo is the colour of a generation? I think this could have been one of her "Chinese goddess" moments... or maybe she's talking about something very valid but which isn't what I understand by indigo. But if she was writing in the book which introduced the concept as I understand it, all of the traits such as rebelliousness and feeling like an alien on this planet, then I wonder...
